Directive for Plastic Articles (2002/72/EC)

90/128/EEC was replaced by 2002/72/EC
the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union published the Commission Directive 90/128/EEC on 1990 February 23,which related to product with plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. Since 1993,the Directive has prohibited trade in those products which de not comply with the requirement. As last amended by Directive 2002/72/EC, it has been frequently and substantially replaced; for reasons of clarity and rationality, it should therefore be consolidated.
What is 2002/72/EC?
The Directive is suitable for any plastic articles, such as bowl, cup, jar and lunch box, which are intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. The migration of extractable matter from plastic is determined. In general, the permissible limit is 10mg/dm2 for the following 4 food stimulants:
· Water extractive
· 3% acetic acid extractive
· 10%(or 15%) ethanol extractive
· Rectified olive oil extractive
Silicone is not regarded as plastic materials
In addition, the Silicones should be regarded as electrometric materials rather than plastic materials and therefore should be excluded from the definition of plastic.
